So DC Rebirth is in full swing as we talked about in this week's comics. Among the relaunched titles was ever-present Action Comics which went back to its original numbering, ignoring the departure in numbering that 'New 52' presented.
*THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS*
Action Comics 957 kicks off right away with a bank heist in Metropolis (stop the press, right?) and a big savior shows up with a bright 'S' on his chest. All is not what it seems however, as we find out it is none other than Lex Luthor! He explains to the assembled onlookers that he is wearing the cape and 'S' in homage to Superman, who died at the end of New 52, while he apprehends the enemies of Metropolis.
The art really struck me as perfectly balanced but erring just on the side of grittiness with two-too-many pencil strokes. It made for really dynamic visuals, unsurprising considering Patrick Zircher's other work (Nightwing, Suicide Squad).
Dan Jurgens is the perfect choice to take the reins on this title since the main Superman is his very own Supes from 'Superman: Lois and Clark'. My favourite bit in the issue was when Clark goes a bit crazy after seeing Luthor wearing his logo and quickly uses his laser vision reflected off a mirror to shave (not for the first time).
I also kind of like the fact that this Superman is a no-nonsense Clark Kent. His first urge when he sees Luthor is to rip the emblem off his chest first, ask questions later...
I'll be adding it to my regular pulls. Well worth picking up.
